Welcome to Kellogg second grade!
The second grade team values both academic and social emotional growth. We use a variety of tools and curriculum, including the Second Step program, to encourage life skills and personal development.
Second grade is a pivotal year to foster the love of reading. In our Wonders language arts curriculum, we focus on reading skills and strategies, academic vocabulary, and reading fluency. We emphasize writing in complete sentences and learning paragraph structure. Students write opinion, explanatory, and narrative pieces using their knowledge of spelling patterns and proper grammar.
Second grade Bridges math curriculum allows students to collaboratively explore numbers through games and hands-on activities. Students learn a variety of mathematical strategies for two digit addition and subtraction.
I have been teaching at Kellogg for the last 7 years. In February, I was privileged with the honor of accompanying Mrs. Davis to accept the California Distinguished School award for Kellogg. I am so proud to be part of this amazing school community. Teaching is a calling for me, and I am passionate about helping children gain the skills to be independent learners and empathetic people. I have taught kindergarten, first grade, third grade and second grade and each year I love getting to know my students as individuals and helping them find their path to success and growth.
My husband, daughter and I love living in Santa Barbara where I grew up. We spend as much time as we can outside, going to the beach to explore tide pools, visiting the ducks at Lake Los Carneros, and wandering around the Santa Barbara Zoo. I spend time with my friends and family as often as possible, but I also love being home and cozy with my family.
I have been teaching at Kellogg School for 5 years, after teaching 5 years at a small school in Santa Barbara. At Kellogg, I have taught 6th grade, kindergarten, and 2nd grade. Second grade is a magical year when students grow in their love for reading, expand their math skills, and explore all their curiosities. I love second graders’ enthusiasm towards learning and thoughtful questions as they start to better understand the world around them.
I live in Santa Barbara with my husband Brian, son Griffin, and our dog Wally. Fun Fact about me: I am the 7th generation in my family to be born and raised in Santa Barbara; our family history dates back to before the Presidio. I enjoy traveling to new places, spending time with my family and friends, and weekends at the beach playing with Griffin and Wally.

This is my ninth year teaching at Kellogg. I have taught kindergarten, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, and a ⅔ combination class. I also spent a year teaching art, GATE, and PE. I feel so lucky to be a part of the Kellogg community.
As a student, I often found math challenging and it took awhile for it to “click”. I was so fortunate to have many encouraging teachers who helped me to understand my own learning style and who inspired me to become a teacher. I strive to create a nurturing classroom environment with high expectations in which all students feel valued and successful. I love getting to learn and laugh with my students each year. It is exciting to witness them discover a love of reading, become problem-solvers, and encourage each other.
Outside of school, I enjoy reading, exploring new places, and spending time with my family and friends.
I wanted to be a teacher since I was in 1st grade, and now after over 30 years of teaching, I can honestly say I am equally as passionate about my job. I love the genuine smile of a student who finally grasps a new concept, achieves something they thought impossible, or realizes their ideas do matter.
I graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and then later received my master’s degree from Cal State Northridge. My first job was teaching afternoon kindergarten in Palm Springs. I also gained experience as a graham cracker and milk waitress for the morning kindergarten class. After spending a year in Palm Springs, I worked for Ojai Unified School District for many years. I have taught every grade from kindergarten to 6th grade, along with almost every combination of combos you can create. I love change and challenges. These past 22 years I feel fortunate to have been teaching at Kellogg Elementary School. I love learning from my eager students and my talented colleagues.
On a more personal note, I love doing anything outdoors. Nature feeds my soul! I like to ride my bike, hike, run, paddle board, garden, travel, explore, and be happy. I also enjoy cooking and getting deep into a great book. I have a 95 year young mother who is vibrant and a true inspiration. I can confidently stay I will be around for a while! I love living in Santa Barbara and have a great family and incredible friends.
